RANDY:
It was like a goliath taunting Israel's army
because I had
a young man with schizophrenia in my church.
We were seeing a lot of physical healing, but we weren't seeing any mental
healing.
I said, according to Psalms 2:3, it says, "Praise the Lord O my soul, forget
not all his benefit who forgives us all of sin & heals all our diseases."
So I said, "Lord, it says all, it doesn't just say just physical.
That includes mental illness as well as physical." So we worked & prayed for
that.
There was a man, he heard the Lord speak to him and he goes & gets his
daughter
who he doesn't bring her because she was paranoid schizophrenic.
She had obsessive compulsive disorder
& anorexia. When
he brought her, a friend of mine, an engineer by trade was starting a new
church there, reached over & just said, "I bless you in Jesus' name," &
she fell out. Then that night when she went home she heard the Lord speak,
"I anoint your head with oil," & she did,
"I anoint your whole body with oil," & she did.
She was knocked to the floor & stuck to the floor like electricity going
through her body until morning.
When she got up she was mentally normal & healthy. |

COMMENTARY - Sometimes Christian counseling is just secular counseling for Christians
often by pastors.
This can be a tragedy for a number of reasons.
1- We are regurgitating the negatives each office visit. 2- We are
speaking negatively giving the enemy power in our spiritual realm.
Whatever we say positive or negative controls the spiritual realm.
3- We are forgetting that through being born again & water baptism we have
become dead with Christ & subsequently alive in Christ.
When we give
attention to our negative feelings we have gone back to the future for all
intents & purposes or negated our new life in Christ.
If we are dead
in the flesh,
then we need to practice being dead.
4- Especially after
the baptism in the Holy Spirit, we need to listen to the promptings/leadings
of the Holy Spirit,
Who will direct us with wisdom and knowledge. It
is He who is to be our tutor/mentor/counselor.
5-1If any root
issues are demonic roots, then sometimes deliverance is needed.
6-Non
Christian "spiritual" counseling can result in demonic infestation.

take our thoughts captive, not our
feelings.
"Casting down imaginations, &
every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God & bringing into captivity
every thought to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV
This is an important distinction, because feelings are the fruits of our
thoughts. I have a lime tree in my garden.
I only get limes from that tree. You'd think I
was crazy if
I expected peaches from my lime tree.
The fruit tells you the type of tree
that is growing.
What are you feeling? Feelings are useful as they tell you the type of tree
that is growing in your mind. If you want to change how you feel then you
must change how you think.
I believe there are 2 main trees of the mind, that we choose to
either cultivate or starve.
These trees do not grow well together. One will
always dominate the other.
The 1st is the Tree of Faith.
This tree believes that God is always good, that we are completely loved,
completely forgiven, and that our future will 'work together for good.'
People who have this tree as the dominant tree in the garden of their mind
will experience joy, peace, hope, &
faith, as well as the other fruits of the spirit.
In contrast, we have the choice of allowing another tree to grow in our
mind. I call this tree the Tree of Unbelief.
This tree prospers in a mind that doubts the goodness of God, the
unrelenting love of God & a future
that is secure... There is another particularly
poisonous tree
that some allow to grow in their minds.
I call it the
Tree of Offense. This tree germinates from the seed
of being unwilling to forgive once offended.
It is like cancer to the
thought life, contaminating the soil of our minds. This tree produces the
fruit of rage, jealousy, bitterness, & envy, & is frequently found in the
minds of those suffering from anxiety &
depression.
If this tree is not uprooted, the Tree of Faith will be unable to grow.
In
ReNew I devote an entire chapter to Forgiveness.
If you hold offense towards yourself, others, or God you will never live
in freedom.
What do you feel most of the time? If love, joy, peace, patience,
gentleness, etc. are a common state for you, then the Tree of Faith is the
dominant tree growing in your mind.
If you are sad, fearful, hopeless,
anxious, etc then the Tree of Unbelief is dominant.
If you are angry,
bitter, full of rage & envy, chances are you the Tree of
Offense has taken root as well...
We are body, mind, and spirit & that our brain is affected by all 3
realms.
The prevalence of anxiety & depression is higher than you might expect.
The church is no exception...
I look for root causes
that may be physical, psychological, or spiritual. This is critical, because
counseling will be of minimal benefit to someone with hormonal dysfunction
or deficient brain chemistry. Likewise, medication will be ineffective for
someone who has opened themselves up to oppressive, demonic influences due
to unforgiveness or other sin patterns. Mood disorders may start out rooted
in 1 area, but our body, mind & spirit are intricately interwoven, & dysfunction in one area quickly
affects all 3 areas...
The key point here is that
thoughts produce feelings and feelings produce
actions."

Often mental illness is a spiritual rather than an
mental or a chemical imbalance, due to the interference of an evil spirit,
often invited by sin or by inheritance.

to remain until one recognizes it as a likely root issue, repents of any

made this observation in his excellent paper on psychotherapy.
If man's
nature does not include a spiritual dimension, it is incomplete. This
incompleteness affects theories of personality development so much that they
are inadequate to describe normal personality structure.
An incomplete
concept of normal personality structure will affect the accuracy of
diagnosis & the appropriateness of treatment &
psychological man is subject to biological & psychological disease, so is
spiritual man subject to spiritual disease. Man is a unity, so when he is
sick in any area of his being, he is sick in all areas.
It follows then that
if man has a spiritual dimension to his nature, he can have primary &
secondary spiritual disease. Spiritual disease can only be treated with
spiritual interventions.
The use of biological and psychological interventions for primary & some secondary spiritual disease will be
futile exercises...Christianity asserts that only an
encounter with Jesus Christ can bring permanent relief...
The 2nd spiritual disease
affecting man is
sin.
MacKay10 wrote that sin is a disease characterized by hopelessness, moral
paralysis & despair of
morality...
The 3rd spiritual disease is called
demonization. Satan has convinced the
world that he does not exist so that none pays any attention to his
activities. This arises out of the idea that there is no supernatural
dimension to existence...The Bible makes it plain that Satan is real & that
he has minions called demons who do his will.
These demons can possess
people, oppress people & obsess people.
They can be healed with
deliverance administered by mature Christians...
God knows all about us & will bring into consciousness those things that
have traumatized us in the past if we ask him. Once they have been brought
into consciousness, God also helps us to confess the memories & their
cathected emotions & then assess our responsibility.
If we are culpable of
wrongdoing, either primarily or secondarily, we can repent by his power & be
forgiven.
When we are forgiven or have forgiven, we decathect the damaging
emotions stored in our emotional museums. Forgiveness is 1 of the
most important spiritual interventions that Christians possess. Forgiveness
is the act of giving up anger (resentment, hate) held against some person
for some hurt inflicted by that person...
Forgiveness by man is characterized by the removal of the emotional memory
aroused by a past offense against the person. The memory of the event is not
removed.
Even when an offense has been adjudicated in the
courts & a pardon has been given, a record of the offense still exists. In
both instances, the significance of the forgiveness rests on justice being
done and the authority of the person offering the forgiveness. Because the
Lord Jesus took our punishment, justice is done & the debt is paid.
Also since
he is the final judicial authority, forgiveness from him is the most
significant. Even more important, God forgets our sins if he has forgiven
them. The record is cleared of any evidence of our wrongdoing...
We as Christians have been deputized to pass on the forgiveness of God to
repentant men & women.
This is not something that secular psychiatrists
can do...
Inner healing
is another intervention, uniquely Christian, that was 1st
described by Agnes Sanford.*22 Although it has been widely accepted
and used by some Christian therapists, it has recently come under attack by
Hunt & McMahon.23 Jesus is the Lord
of time; therefore it is possible to use this technique to heal the past.
David Seamands24 in his excellent book,
Healing of Memories,
has lucidly described the technique, so I will not elaborate on it further.
I do want to emphasize that its use has profoundly enhanced my
psychotherapeutic effectiveness.
Prayer is the most useful technique that I use in treating my patients.
None
of the spiritual interventions, other than discipleship training, can be
carried out without it...

There are major differences between secular & Christian psychiatrists. We
cannot expect psychiatrists of other faiths or non-biblical Christians to
understand it.
