Baptism of Suffering
                         (passion in English is translated as pati in Latin meaning to suffer)

Psalm 22:24 KJVer    He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted.  Neither has he hid His face from him.  When he cried to Him, He heard.  My Praise shall be of You in the great congregation.

Matthew 10:28    Do NOT be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul.  Rather,  be afraid of the one who can destroy both the soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:39     Jesus said, "He who loses his life for My sake will find it."
Matthew 11:12 KJV    From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence (from the enemy of God).  The violent (men empowered with the Holy Spirit) take (rescue) it by force (from the enemy of God).
Matthew 20:22-23    Jesus answered and said, "You know not what you ask.  Are you able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of and to be baptized with the baptism  that I am baptized with?"  They said to Him, "We are able."  He said to them, "You shall drink indeed of My cup and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized." (This scripture precedes the Palm Sunday chapter.)
Matthew 26:36, 39    Jesus went with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."  Going a little farther, He fell with His face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me.  Yet not as I will, but as You will." (This scripture precedes the arrest and subsequent death of Jesus.)
Matthew 27:46 KJV    About the 9th hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, Imana sabachthani."("My God, My God, for this I was kept" is an Aramaic/Arabic idiom meaning, This was my destiny; I was  born for this. Aramaic Scripture from New Testament)
Mark 14:32-36 TNAB    32They came to a place named Gethsemane; He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray."  33He took with Him Peter, James and John and began to be troubled and distressed.  34Then He said to them, "My  soul is sorrowful even to death.  Remain here and keep watch."  35He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed, that if it were possible the hou might pass by Him.  36He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to You.  Take this cup away from Me, but mot what I will, but what You will."  
Luke 22:39-46 TNAB    39Then going out He went, as was His custom, to the Mount of Olives; His disciples followed Him.  40When He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test."  41After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, He prayed, 42saying, "Father, if You are willing, take this cup away from Me; still, not My will but Yours be done."  43[To strengthen Him an angel from heaven appeared to Him.  44He was in such agony and He prayed so fervently that His sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.]  45When He rose from prayer and returned to His disciples, He found them sleeping from grief.  46He said to them, "Why are you sleeping?  Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test."
Acts 9:16 TNAB    "(Ananias,) I (Jesus) will show him what he (Saul/Paul) will have to suffer for My name."
Acts 14:22-23 KJVer    We must go through much tribulation to enter into the kingdom of God.  When (after) they had ordained them elders in every church and had prayed with fasting, they (then/next) commended them to the Lord, on (in) Whom they believed.
Romans 8:14-23 NIV   Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  You did NOT receive a(n evil) spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the (Holy) Spirit of sonship.  By Him we cry, "Abba, Father."  The Spirit Himself testifies with our (human) spirit  that we are God's children.  If we are (His) children, then we are heirs (heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ) if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.  I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.  The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.  Creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One Who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.  We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.  Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the (Holy) Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies (and souls/mind). 
Romans 8:31-39 TNAB    31If God is for us, who can be against us?  32He Who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for us all, how will He not also give us everything else along with Him?  33Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones?  It is God Who acquits us.  34Who will condemn?  It is Christ [Jesus] Who died, rather, was raised, Who also is at the right hand of God, Who indeed intercedes for us.  35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall  trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger or sword?  36As it is written (in Psalm 44), "For Your sake we are being slain all the day; we are look upon as sheep to be slaughtered."  37No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through Him Who loved us.  38For I am convinced that neither death, life, angels, principalities, present things, future things, powers, 39height, depth, nor any other (evil) creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2nd Corinthians 5:21 TPNT    He (Father God) made the One  (Jesus) Who did not know sin to be sin (on the cross) on our behalf, so that we ourselves would know the righteousness of God by means of Him.
Philippians 3:10 KJV    I may know Him, the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable to His death, if by any means I might attain to the resurrection of the dead.
Hebrews 2:10 NIV    In bringing many (spiritual/adopted/saved/forgiven) sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for Whom and through Whom everything exists, should make the Author of their (my/our) salvation perfect through suffering.  
Hebrews 5:7 TNAB    In the days when He was (alive) in the flesh, He offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the One Who was able to save Him from death; (afterward/after His death) He was heard (answered/rescued) because of His reverence.
Hebrews 5:8 KJV    Though He was the Son (of God), He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.  
Hebrews 12:4    You have not yet resisted to blood (martyrdom), striving against sin.
James 1:2-3    Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."
1st Peter 4:12-16 NIV    12Do NOT be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.  13Rejoice, that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed.  14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.  15If you suffer, it should NOT be as a murderer, thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.  16If you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
Revelation 1:9 KJV    I, John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation (suffering for the gospel) and in the kingdom, and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the 1st and last."
Revelation 2:10    "Be faithful until death and I will give you the crown of life."   (Christ's death was not for His own benefit.  His death was a substitute guilt offering for us, entitling us to get a free ticket into heaven.)

Chapter 14  Preaching to a Growing Church shares that we should never suffer for personal sin, sickness, the devil, a curse, or poverty, but only for the sake of the gospel, because of persecution.  Christ removed/took care of man's problems at the cross.  Any suffering that does not bring any redeeming/spiritual (salvation/deliverance/healing/etc) result, especially for others, causes nothing but affliction/trauma.

Chapter 19  Increase Our Faith - The Prayer of the Disciples - Luke 17:5  reminds us that not only was Jesus martyred, but also His disciples.  James, John's brother, was executed; Matthew was killed by the sword; John was boiled in boiling oil; Peter and Andrew were crucified on a X-shaped cross; James the Just was thrown down 100 feet and then clubbed to death; Matthias plus James the Greater (with his new convert, a Roman officer) were beheaded; Bartholomew (Nathaniel) was martyred by whipping; Thomas was stabbed with a spear.

Chapter 8 Why Do the Righteous Suffer?  "There are many in the healing ministry who insist that Paul did not have a physical sickness, that he was referring to his persecutions and trials of faith.  However, in the Book of Galatians he specifically said that it was because of 'a bodily ailment' that he stayed with them to preach the Gospel and reminded these people that they would have gladly plucked out their eyes and given them to him, if it were possible.  And when speaking of the 'thorn in the flesh,' he called it an infirmity and so did the Lord.  This is the very same word in the Greek language that is used in Matthew 8:17, where Isaiah 53:4 is quoted, 'He took our infirmities (sicknesses) and bore our diseases,' to say that Jesus fulfilled this when He healed all the sick in Peter's house." 
Sin is deal with in the next verse.  Isaiah 53:5 (KJVer)    He was wounded (physically) for our transgressions.  He was bruised (pierced) for our iniquities (rebellion/sin).  The chastisement of our peace was upon Him and with (by) His stripes (wounds/ whipping)) we ARE healed  (physically).  Benny Hinn explains that the front of the cross/Jesus is for the eradication of sin, while the back of the cross/Jesus is for the eradication of disease/infirmity.

Book's chapter 15 Fire of Testing and Persecution discusses mostly psychiatric/emotional/soul torments (due to being a disciple of Christ), although author herself did go through a harrowing time of family devastation during the Rwandan holocaust.  Basically, one who is on fire for Christ, needs to expect that the kingdom of Satan is threatened;  Satin will counterattack, using any method on any weakness/vulnerability we have.  One needs to silently stick to Christ,
even if the end result is martyrdom.  Excellent chapter for those beginning a ministry.

Exodus 32:29 - Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord...that He may bestow upon you a blessing.  Based on this scripture, Nee teaches a personal consecration of ourselves to God, over and above our consecration to Him at the time we accept what Jesus did for us on the cross.  Nee teaches a consecration that excludes any work we may do for the Lord.  It is a personal relationship, like that of a wedding, compared to an earlier bridal engagement, as at salvation.  Engagements often have one ring for the finger of the bride-to-be.  At weddings there is often a second ring for the bride.  Nee teaches a consecration to the "will of God."  During many marriage vows we say that we will marry our mate for better or worse, in sickness until death.  It is a life commitment. If you make such a consecration, mark the date in your Bible; then renew that commitment each year.

The  Lord spoke to Liu (Brother Yun), "The reason you suffer is so you can partake in the fellowship of My suffering.  Be still and know that I am God."

                                                                  Commentary:
Beware of Watchman Nee's    The Latent Power of the Soul    where Nee attributes paranormal exploits to the subconscious mind rather than to evil spirits.  However, he does realize that such activity is demonic.
Beware of the religious philosophy that things such as disease and trouble are to be endured since Christ also suffered.  Much of what we suffer is the consequence of our wrong choices or from inherited curses.
Christ's suffering was prophesied in the Old Testament to fulfill God's promise to rescue man.  There is a huge divide between suffering/persecution for believing in Jesus Christ and non religious suffering!

Matthew 10:1,5,8    He (while Jesus was still alive) called His 12 disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every  disease and sickness...These 12, Jesus sent out with the following instructions, "...Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons."
Matthew 28:18-19 NIV    Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Mark 16:14-18    Later (after Jesus' resurrection from the dead) Jesus appeared to the 11 as they were eating.  He rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.  He said to them. "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned (by satin and by their unforgiven sin).  These signs will accompany those who believe: In My name:  They will  drive out demons.  They will speak in new tongues.  They will pick up snakes with their hands.  When they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all.  They will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."  After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God.  Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed His word by the signs that accompanied it.

Luke 4:18-19    The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me (me) to preach the gospel to the poor.  He has sent Me (me) to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.  (Spiritual insight = Jesus/the Holy Spirit in me is God at work in the earth.)
  
John 20:19-23    On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came (through the locked door) and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you"  After He said this, He showed them His (crucified) hands and side.  The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.  Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you.  As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you."  With that He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven (released from apologizing and debt owed, but not free to abuse).  If you (retain) do not forgive them, they are (retained) not forgiven."
Now Thomas (called Didymus) 1 of the 12, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

1st Peter 1:1-2    Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, "To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood.

Autobiography.  Father insists that as a certified college professor, priest, chaplain, and pastoral counselor, he would be disqualified - without the baptism in the Holy Spirit - and end up with human results rather than God's.  He also notes that the short time after the Holy Spirit baptism is the honeymoon period. He says this baptism is a must for each of us, not only for priests and revered saints.  He was privileged to be prayed over by Kathryn Kuhlman in Jerusalem. He remarks that only one who has a personal relationship with Christ can evangelize and explain to others their need for a personal relationship with Jesus; one cannot share what he does not have. You cannot share a loaf of bread if you have no bread. The spirit of Christ is contagious, like a virus, and not taught.

Lake contends that one must consecrate his spirit, his mind, and his body to God.  Salvation/water baptism of the spirit alone is insufficient for God to do His best work in us.  God wants us to be clones of Jesus, sons with Holy Spirit powers equal to Jesus.  We must not be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good.  We must daily (until death) hunger after and pursue the mind of God in each situation, be translated to heaven, and then with Holy Spirit boldness accomplish on earth what He has already been accomplished in heaven.  Most of us do no take what has already been accomplished in heaven.  That is why many prayers are not answered.  It is not God's fault.  It is not Satan's fault.  It is our neglect.  God is waiting on us to act on our own behalf and on the behalf of others.  This is our mandate as brothers/sisters of Christ and sons/daughters of God.  Wake up.  Do not lose 40 years as Moses did.  In Chapter 25 Adventures in God Lake testifies that God healed him of a 9 year bout with constipation upon his 100% consecration of his spirit, mind and body to God.
Chapter 25 also addresses Paul's thorn in the flesh.  Lake contends that on the 3rd plea, Paul was healed.  Lake believes 2nd Corinthians 12:9 should read, "Paul, My grace is sufficient for you (to heal your spirit, to heal your mind and to heal your body)!
Chapter 43 The Baptism of the Holy Ghost has a plethora of "awe inspiring, unique, and encouraging" sermons. This chapter in itself is a reason to buy this book.  We recommend it as a "must read" book.

Jesus told Dale that one must believe in Him AND also be baptized in order to be saved.  Dale admonishes us to ask our pastors to baptize us with water and to ask Jesus to baptize us with His Holy Spirit.  Those of us who have had an infant christening or infant baptism, may want/need to pursue an adult baptism, even if our local congregation accepts that as sufficient.  Lakes, rivers, oceans and swimming pools work as well as church tubs.

May 2004 magazine The Voice of the Martyrs spells out the trials of those who first printed the Bible in various countries and the trials even now in many countries.  The Word of God is surely written in not only the blood of Christ, but also the blood of many translators, printers, and holy smugglers. Section New Testament Baptisms delves into the necessity of adult "baptism by immersion in water" for believers, to separate ourselves from the power of Satan.  This issue is also covered in Prince's book They Shall Expel Demons. Regardless of our doctrinal position, if we follow Jesus' example as protocol, then baptism by immersion seems to be the spiritual thing to do.  This can be done in a swimming pool, in a large pot of clay, in a river, or in the ocean, as well as at church.

Chapter 15 The Double Minded Man shares that Satan tricks us by injecting thoughts into our minds beginning with the word "I".  For instance, if on Monday we accept Jesus as our savior/healer/baptizer, but on Thursday we ask again to be saved/healed/baptized, we may have been listening to/believing Satan's lies and not standing on/quoting out loud the facts of scripture.
Chapter 17 Deliverance warns us to steer away from exorcisms where the speaking of tongues is allowed during deliverance, because demons can speak in tongues.
