Curly Whiskers (Cw) is a rare Rh allele (a blood factor) that, perhaps, can be implicated in Schizophrenia and related chemical brain disorders (which are currently defined as Axis I and II mental disorders). ©2002-ThroughToday All rights reserved.

In the 70's, a newborn American became jaundiced due to a rare blood factor, Cw, inherited from his European father.  His mother’s blood was screened post partum.  The Direct Coombs method revealed that anti Cw blood had crossed her placenta wall and attacked the fetus to cause his jaundice, which was remediated with lights (phototherapy).  Out of all their children, he is the only one to have jaundice at birth.  In college, at the age of 19, he suddenly became ill with the same disorder that 2 of his father’s institutionalized siblings have in Europe - schizophrenia.  Luckily, schizophrenia can be remediated with newer medications, vitamins and, thank God, with prayer.  That is true of this child.  He went, in baby steps, from being bedridden to working full time.  Awesome.

Today most medical scientists believe that the majority of
psychotic mental illnesses (where there is loss of insight) are caused by an organic biochemical brain dysfunction and NOT caused by bad parenting or one’s own inadequate adaptation to life (character defect).

"The most immuno-reactive marker (that is, the one which it is most important to match in blood transfusions) is the D marker. Thus, in general parlance, when somebody is "rhesus positive" (like you) it means that they have the D rhesus marker and if they are "rhesus negative" they do not have the D rhesus marker.
Some other markers that blood may have antibodies to are Kell, Kidd and Duffy. These are quite rare, but relatively low concentrations can occasionally produce serious problems so they are important for doctors to know about.
So what does all this mean for you and your baby? As antibodies cause foreign red blood cells to be attacked, IF a significant number of your anti-Cw antibodies get into the baby's circulation, and IF your baby has Cw red blood cells (Cw antigens), the baby's blood may be attacked. However, this will only happen if you have a relatively high blood concentration (titer) of anti-Cw antibodies."

HLA-C series antigens (Cw 1-Cw5)...(1975) Schizophrenia susceptibility and HLA antigen. Neuropsychobiology, 1211. FRIEND, P., KIM, Y., HANDWERGER
"It was presumed that the increase of Cw4 represents the common denominator of the diverse findings on paranoid schizophrenia. The increase of Cw4 indicates that the paranoid schizophrenia disease susceptibility locus is either the C locus itself or another closely linked locus (or loci). This would stress the importance of the HLA ‘central' regions for HLA and disease associations."  A hypothesis is presented which points to the possibility that HLA antigens could be genetic markers of three ethiopatho-genetic subgroups of schizophrenia. The possible tests of this hypothesis are also suggested."
