"Dr. Ames was 1 of the early heroes of environmentalism. He invented the widely used Ames Test, which is a quick way to screen for potential carcinogens by seeing if a chemical causes mutations in bacteria.
After he discovered that Tris, a flame-retardant in children’s pajamas, caused mutations in the Ames Test,
he helped environmentalists 3 decades ago in their successful campaign to ban Tris, 1 of the early victories against synthetic chemicals.  But Dr. Ames began rethinking this war against synthetic chemicals after thousands of chemicals had been subjected to his test. He noticed that plenty of natural chemicals flunked the Ames test.
He & Dr. Gold took a systematic look at the chemicals that had been tested on rodents. They found that about half of natural chemicals tested positive for carcinogencity, the same proportion as the synthetic chemicals. Fruits, vegetables, herbs & spices contained their own pesticides that caused cancer in rodents.  The toxins were found in apples, bananas, beets, Brussel sprouts, collard greens, grapes, melons, oranges, parsley, peaches...
Then Dr. Ames and Dr. Gold estimated the prevalence of these natural pesticides in the typical diet.
In a paper published in 2000 in Mutation Research, they conclude:
About 99.9% of the chemicals humans ingest are natural. The amounts of synthetic pesticide residues in plant food are insignificant compared to the amount of natural pesticides produced by plants themselves.
Of all dietary pesticides that humans eat, 99.99% are natural:
they are chemicals produced by plants to defend themselves against fungi, insects & other animal predators.

Here’s the problem, as stated by The Detox Project:  The cultivation of Roundup Ready GMOs has considerably increased food contamination by glyphosate. Roundup Ready plants do not degrade glyphosate but tolerate it, so they accumulate Roundup residues during their growth. As a consequence, glyphosate has among the highest maximum residue limits for pesticides with up to 500,000 parts per billion authorized in some GM feed.
A recent study on 10 batches of GM soybeans from Iowa found glyphosate at an average concentration of 11,900 ppb (maximum of 20,100 ppb).
According to Monsanto, residues levels of up to 5,600 ppb in GM soy represent ‘extreme levels. 
In the main, this article has dealt with one chemical; i.e., glyphosate, at the expense of further investigation of the entire complex of chemicals. That’s an encyclopedic task over decades just to get to the bottom of whether pesticide suicide is truly a reality. Therein lies the horrifying, frightening aspect of a world ubiquitously covered with chemicals. By the time you know for sure, it’s late. 
Meanwhile, a Rand Corporation study states that 60% of Americans have 1 & 40% have multiple chronic conditions: Nearly 150 million Americans are living with at least 1 chronic condition; around 100 million of them have more than 1. Nearly 30 million are living, day in & day out, with 5 chronic conditions or more.9

But a 2011 Canadian study conducted at Sherbrooke Hospital discovered that 93% of the pregnant women they tested had Bt-toxin in their blood. So too did 80% of their unborn fetuses.26
Thus, not only was the toxin not fully broken down in the stomach, a toxin is circulating within our blood stream that might further damage the cell walls it encounters.
In fetuses, which don’t have developed blood-brain barriers, this might result in damage to brain cells."

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which labels Bt corn & Bt cotton plants as registered pesticides, insists that Bt-toxin will have absolutely no influence on human or mammalian cells.
But research published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology25 in 2012 proves otherwise. Researchers 'documented that modified Bt toxins [from GM plants] are not inert on human cells, but can exert toxicity.'
In high concentrations (generally higher than that produced in average Bt corn), Bt-toxin disrupts the membrane in just 24, causing certain fluids to leak through the cell walls. The authors specifically note, 'This may be due to pore formation like in insect cells.' Thus, Bt-toxin may indeed create small holes in our intestines.
Garry Gordon, MD, warns, 'If [Bt-toxin] is causing an increased propensity for our intestine to become permeable or leaky & for foods to be presented to our bloodstream in a premature fashion, the havoc that it will cause will be across the entire spectrum of disease, from premature aging & Alzheimer’s to Parkinson’s to autism to cancer to asthma.'  The EPA had also claimed that Bt-toxin was destroyed during digestion in humans. But a 2011 Canadian study conducted at Sherbrooke Hospital discovered that 93% of the pregnant women they tested had Bt-toxin in their blood. So too did 80% of their unborn fetuses.26
Thus, not only was the toxin not fully broken down in the stomach, a toxin is circulating within our blood stream that might further damage the cell walls it encounters.
In fetuses, which don’t have developed blood-brain barriers, this might result in damage to brain cells." 
[Yes, saying "grace" before meals is our only current recourse, other than eating all certified organic food.]
