Cataracts

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

B2 (riboflavin) with vitamin C combine to produce glutathione reductase to abolish the toxicity of solar ultraviolet radiation. 10 mg per day should be sufficient.  Excess B2 may lead to loss of sight!  (Preferred supplementation is a multi B vitamin, as the B's work in concert.)

Adams reports a number of cases of cataracts disappearing due to intake of
vitamin E
B (UVB) radiation contributes to cataract formation but natural vitamin E lowers this risk. 5/05 www.lef.org
Satin meds to combat high cholesterol may contribute to the formation of cataracts.  See medication labels.  Cholesterol is needed to maintain eye lens transparency.   The fruit/vegetable colorful carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, plus vitamins A, C, and E (alpha tocopherol) may help prevent and reverse cataracts. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the eye lens and macula.  They are antioxidants which absorb
the near-to-UV blue light potentially damaging to retina and macula.
Carnosine (amino acids abeta-alanine + L-histidine) supplements may inhibit advanced glycation (AGE).
Cataract eye drops containing N-acetyl-carnosine may help reduce lens clouding from cataract formation.

A daily dose of 6 mg lutein + zeaxanthin, 500 mg vitamin C, 400 mg vitamin E, 15 mg beta
carotene + 80 mg zinc
seems to protect macular degeneration or AMD per 3/2/04 Wall St Journal

Lutein
(from marigold flowers) + zeaxanthin are beneficial for most all eye diseases per 2005
collectors edition of Life Extension. The eye converts lutein  into a compromise structure, meso-zeaxanthin
Zeaxanthin is found in corn, peaches, and peppers.   www.lef.org

L-carnosine is a natural eye anti-oxidant. http://www.naturalskinrepair.com/l-carnosine.html  vitamin/supplement
"Carnosine is a combination of 2 important amino acids, beta-alanine and L-histidine. It occurs naturally in the human body (mainly in muscle) and can also be found in many animal (muscle). Carnosine is easily broken down into beta-alanine and L-histidine, but the remarkable thing is that these 2 amino acids now work much more efficiently than they would have done if they hadn't combined to form L-Carnosine."
"Carnosine helps to prevent glycosylation [the cross linking of proteins and DNA molecules caused by sugar aldehydes reacting with the amino acids on the protein molecule and creating Advance Glycosylation End-products (AGE's)] and may be beneficial for (reversing) diabetes, cataracts, neuropathy, kidney failure...skin conditions...aging."
"Russians have been using a 'special' kind of carnosine known as N-alpha acetyl-carnosine or NAC."
"Caution:
We do not recommend oral dosages larger than 600mg (of carnosine) per day. We are aware of cases of muscle twitching with 1g plus dosages." http://www.antiaging-systems.com/a2z/carnosine.htm
(Always begin with low dosage.)

Regarding supplements:
"
The lens requires high concentrations of vitamin C. Research recommends not less than 1,000 mg. per day.
Glutathione is a small protein (peptide) composed of three amino acids
glycine, glutamic acid, and cysteine. The lens shows high concentrations of Glutathione. However, as we age, these levels drop off considerably, leaving the lens vulnerable to cataract formation. It is essential for the formation of a healthy lens. Glutathione works very close with vitamin C. Use real all natural vitamin C not the synthetic Ascorbic acid.
Glutathione requires selenium to neutralize free-radicals. When selenium levels are down in the eye, cataract levels are up.
In cataract cases, tetrohydrobiopaterin is low, but since there are no supplements for this a person should take extra folic acid which increases the body’s ability to produce tetrohydrobiopaterin."

"Kiwifruit is loaded with vitamin C, an antioxidant that may minimize your risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Researchers speculate that the vitamin may work by protecting the lens of your eye." http://www.chsir.com/News.htm
Pumpkin contains high concentrations of the antioxidant beta carotene, the carotenoid that helps fight the effects of cell-damaging free radicals.  2 more carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, give pumpkin even more cancer-fighting power, and also help prevent eyes from developing cataracts. Don't forget the pumpkin seeds! http://www.chsir.com/News.htm
Within the central macula, zeaxanthin is the dominant component.  In the peripheral retina, lutein predominates. Lutein and zeaxanthin have identical chemical formulas and are isomers, but they are not stereoisomers. The main difference between them is in the location of a double bond in one of the end rings. This difference gives lutein 3 chiral centers whereas zeaxanthin has 2.  Zeaxanthin is a yellow pigment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeaxanthin

SCRIPTURE

Tobit 11:7-8 NAB 7(The angel) Raphael said to Tobiah before he reached his father, "I am certain that his eyes will be opened.  8Smear the fish gall on them.  This medicine will make the cataracts shrink and peel off from his eyes; then our father will again be able to see the light of day."

WARNINGS

Sardi, Bill  What's Best - the Definite Guide through Vitamania "Excessive levels of calcium...can produce ...arthritis, irritability, cataracts, hypertension, kidney stones, hardening of heart valves (mitral valve prolapse)...and sudden death heart attack...At intakes greater than 2,000 mg per day...(calcium) interferes with absorption of...zinc and magnesium...Magnesium is nature's calcium-blocker.  Women should take calcium in an equal ratio to magnesium, or even more magnesium than calcium... Calcium citrate is preferred...(and) is absorbed regardless of the availability of digestive juice and minimizes the formation of kidney stones.  Calcium from oyster shell, dolomite or bone meal may contain toxic metals (lead)."
