In tropical countries such as Egypt, trachoma was a terrible problem. Most people gradually went blind. A few doctors treated it with zinc or copper salts. These were irritating, but slowly cured the disease. Cotton was soaked in salt water and then wrung out and put over the closed eyes. A special branching eye electrode was used to treat the eyes. A 10-minute treatment was administered every day for a week. Then a treatment every other day was given for the next 2 weeks. This would usually cure the most stubborn cases. Albert Geyser treated 18 cases of trachoma with vacuum electrodes over the eyes. He used 3 treatments a week, and the treatment lasted from 3 weeks to 3 months." |
