Miracles in Scripture

Miracles are often classified as instantaneous miraculous interventions by God, such as creating a missing eye; a performance by God that would not normally be done by a doctor or nature.  Some people prefer to separate healings (so called remission of disease) from miracles (creative works of God) such as NEW eyes, legs, breasts, heart, etc.

2nd CORINTHIANS 11:9-11 KJVer    To one (individual) is given by the (Holy) Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge, to another faith, to another the gifts of healing, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another diverse kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues; all these (are different) works, that one same (Holy) Spirit divides (distributes) to every (each) man severally (individually).

MATTHEW 7:20-22 NIV    "By their fruit you will recognize them.  Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven.  Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, in Your name drive out demons, and perform many miracles?"  Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you.  Away from Me, you evildoers!'" (Spiritual insight = ALWAYS test the spirits, because Satan can copy many of the miracles of the Holy Spirit, as did the magicians at the time of Moses.  The glory must ALWAYS go to God and never to us!)

JOHN 10:25 NIV    The Miracles I (Jesus) do in My Father's Name.

                                                                      BLINDNESS

MATTHEW 9:27-30  Two BLIND men followed  HIM, crying and saying, "You  son of David, have mercy on us."  When HE had come into the house, the BLIND men came to HIM.  JESUS said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"  They  said to HIM, "Yes, Lord."  Then HE  touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it to you."  Their eyes were opened.
MATTHEW 12:22  Then was brought to HIM one possessed with a devil, BLIND and dumb.  HE healed him, so much that the BLIND and dumb man both spoke and saw.
MATTHEW 20:30-34  Two BLIND  men sitting by the way side heard that JESUS was passing by.  They cried out, "Have mercy on us, O LORD, YOU son of David."  JESUS stood still, called them, and said  "What do you want?"  They said, "LORD, open our eyes."  JESUS had compassion on them and touched their eyes.  Immediately their eyes received sight and they followed HIM.

MARK 8:22-25  HE came to Bethsaida. They brought a BLIND man to HIM and besought HIM to touch him.  HE took the BLIND man by the hand and led him out of the town.  When HE had spit on his eyes and put HIS hands on him, HE asked him if he saw anything.  He looked up and said, "I see men as trees, walking."  After that HE put HIS hands again upon his eyes and made him look up; he was restored and saw every man clearly. (TPNT footnote says that the spittle of the firstborn son was believed to have healing power.)
MARK 10:46-52   HE went out of Jericho with HIS disciples and a great number of people.  BLIND Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, sat by the highway begging.  When he heard that is was JESUS of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "JESUS, Son of David, have mercy on me".  JESUS stood still and commanded him to be called.  They called the BLIND man, saying to him, "Be of good comfort; rise.  He calls you."  He cast away his garment, rose, and came to JESUS.  JESUS answered  and said, "What do you want?"  The BLIND man said to HIM, "LORD, I want to receive my sight".  JESUS said, "Go your way; your faith has made you whole".  Immediately, he received his sight and followed JESUS in the way.

JOHN 9:1  As JESUS passed by, HE saw a man which was BLIND from his birth.  HIS disciples asked HIM, saying, "Master, who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"  JESUS answered, "Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.  I must work the works of HIM that sent ME, while it is day.  The night comes, when no man can work.  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."  When HE has thus spoken, HE spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle.  HE anointed the eyes of the BLIND man with the clay and said to him, "Go; wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.)  He went his way therefore, washed, and returned seeing.

DEAF

MARK 7:37 TPNT  "He (Jesus Christ) even makes the deaf to hear and the mutes to speak."

DEATH

1st KINGS 17:21-22 KJVer    He (Elijah) stretched himself upon the child 3 times (a form of artificial respiration), cried to the Lord, and said, "O Lord my God. I pray You, let this child's soul (life/spirit) come (back) into him again."  The Lord heard the voice of Elijah and the soul (spirit/life) of the child came into him again.  He revived.

2nd KINGS 4:14-35 KJVer    14He (Elisha) said, "What then is to be done for her?"  Gehazi answered, "Verily, she has no child, and her husband is old."  15He said, "Call her."  When he had called her, she stood in the door.  16He said, "About this season, according to the time of life, you shall embrace a son."  She said, "No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your handmaid."  17The woman conceived and bore a son at that season that Elisha had  said to her, according to the time of life (gestation).  18When the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.  19He said to his father, "My head.  My head."  He said to a lad, "Carry him to his mother."  20When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he (the son) sat on her knees till noon and then died.  21She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut the door upon him, and went out.  22She called to her husband and said, "Send me, I pray you, one of the young men and one of the asses  that I may run to the man of God and come (back) again."  23He said, "Why will you go to him  today:  It is neither the new moon nor the Sabbath."  She said, "It  shall be well."  Then she saddled an as and said, "  24She saddled an ass (donkey) and said to her servant, "Drive, go forward, slack not your riding for me,  except I bid you."  25She went and came to the man of God at mount Carmel.  It came to pass when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, "Behold yonder is that Shunammite.  26Run now, I pray you, to meet her.  Say to her, 'Is it well with you?  Is it well with the child?'"  She answered, "It is well."  27When she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet; but Gehazi came near to thrust her away.  The man of God said, "Let her alone, for her soul is vexed within her.  The Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me.  28Then she said, "Did I desire a son of my lord"  Did I not say, "Do not deceive me?"  29Then he said to Gehazi, "Gird up your loins, take my staff in you hand, and go your way.  If you meet any man, salute him not.  If  any salute you, answer him not again.  Lay my staff upon the face of the child."  30The mother of the child said, "As the Lord lives and as your soul lives, I will not leave you."  He arose and followed her.  31Gehazi passed on before them and laid the staff upon the face of the child, but there was neither voice nor hearing.  Wherefore he went again to meet him...saying, "The child is not awakened."  32When Elisha came into the house, behold, the child was laid upon his bed, dead.  33He went in therefore and shut the door upon them 2 and prayed to the Lord.  34He went up and lay upon the child, put his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, his hands upon his hands, and he stretched himself upon the child (methods of artificial respiration); the flesh of the child waxed (became) warm. 35He returned, walked in the house to and fro, went up, and stretched himself upon him.  The child sneezed 7 times and opened his eyes.
2nd KINGS 13:20-21 KJVer    Elisha died.  They buried him.  Bands of Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.  It came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men (marauders).  They cast the (dead) man (corpse) into the sepulcher (tomb) of Elisha.  When the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived (was resurrected) and stood up on his feet.

JONAH 1:17 KJVer   The Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.  Jonah was in the belly of the fish 3 days and 3 nights. (See Matthew 12:40   Jesus was in the tomb 3 days + 3 nights.)
JONAH 2:2 KJVer    I cried by reason of my affliction to the Lord.  He heard me.  Out of the belly of Hell (Sheol/the grave) I cried.  He heard my voice.
JONAH 2:10 KJVer   The Lord spoke to the fish, which vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
JONAH 3:3 KJVer    Jonah AROSE and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.

MATTHEW 27:50-53 KJVer    Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost (his spirit/life unto God).  Behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom.  The earth did quake and the rock rent (split).  After His resurrection (from the dead), graves were opened and many bodies (of the saints who slept) arose, came out of the graves, went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

MARK 5:35 KJVer    While He yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain (men) who said, "Your daughter is dead.  Why trouble the Master any further?"  As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Be not afraid. Only believe." 
MARK 5:39-42 KJVer  When He was come in, He said to them, "Why (do) you make this ado (commotion) and weep?  the damsel is not dead, but sleeps."  They laughed Him to scorn.  When He had put them all out,  He took the father and mother of the damsel and those who were with Him, and entered in where the damsel was lying.  He took the damsel by the hand and said to her, "Talithacumi " (which is, being interpreted, "Damsel, I say to you, 'Arise'").  Immediately the damsel arose and walked.  She was 12 years of age.  They were astonished with a great astonishment.

LUKE 7:11-17 KJVer    He went into a city called Nain.  Many of His disciples went with Him and many others.  When He came near the city gate, behold, there was a carried out a dead man, the only son of his mother, a widow.  Many city people were with her.  When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, "Weep not."  He came and   touched the bier.  They that bore him stood still.  He said, "Young man, I say to you, "Arise.'"  He who was dead sat up and began to speak.
LUKE 8:49-50   While (Jesus) was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, "Your daughter is dead.  Do not trouble the Teacher."  But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, "Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.
(Spiritual insight = Greek translation of made well is sozo/saved/healed/delivered/resurrected from the dead.  Sozo or salvation is the provision of Jesus on the cross, 2000 years ago.)"

JOHN 20:11-17 KJVer    Mary stood outside at the sepulcher weeping.  As she wept, she stooped down, looked into the sepulcher, saw 3 angels in white sitting (one at the head and the other at the feet,  where the body of Jesus had lain.)  They said to her, "woman, why do you weep?  She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid Him."  When she had thus spoken, she turned back and saw Jesus standing, but knew (understood/recognized) not that it was Him.   Jesus said to her, "Woman, why do you weep?  Who do you seek?"  She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, "Sir, if you have borne Him away, tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away.  Jesus said to her, "Mary."  She turned and said to Him, Rabboni", which to to say, "Master."  Jesus said to her, "TOUCH Me NOT, for I an NOT yet ascended to My father.  Go to My brethren and say to then that I ascend to My Father, your Father, My God, and your God."
LUKE 24:38-40 KJVer    (Later) He said to them (His disciples/followers/family), "Why are you troubled?  Why do thoughts (questions) arise in your hearts?  Behold My hands and My feet, (and see/recognize) that it is I Myself.  HANDLE me and see, for a SPIRIT has NOT flesh and bones, as you see I have."

JOHN 11:11-15 KJVer    He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep."  His disciples said, "Lord, if he sleeps, he shall do well (recover)."  However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He had spoken of taking rest in sleep.  Then Jesus said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.  I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to (for) the intent (purpose that) you may believe.  Nevertheless, let us go to him." 
JOHN 11:17 KJVer    When Jesus came, He found that he had lain in the grave 4 days already.
JOHN 11:25 KJVer    Jesus said to her (Martha), "I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.  Whoever believes in Me shall live and never die.  Do you believe this?"
JOHN 11:41-44 KJVer    They took away the stone from the place where the dead (body) was laid.  Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.  I know that You hear Me always. Because of the people who stand by I say it (aloud), (so) that they may believe that You have sent Me."  When He had spoken thus, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."  He who was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes.  His face was bound about with a napkin.  Jesus said to them, "Loose him and let him go."

ACTS 9:36-37 KJVer    At Joppa there was a certain disciples named Tabitha (who by interpretation is called Dorcas).  This woman was full of good works and alms deeds which she  did.  It came to pass in those days that she was sick and died.   They washed and laid her in an upper chamber.
ACTS 9:40-42 KJVer    Peter put them all (the weepers) forth (away), knelt down, and prayed.  Turning himself to the body (he) said, "Tabitha, arise."  She opened her eyes.  When she saw Peter, she sat up. 
ACTS 14:19-20 KJVer    Jews from Antioch and Iconium [who persuaded the people (against Paul) and stoned Paul] drew (took) him out of the city, supposing (thinking/assuming) he was dead.  However (nonetheless), as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up (alive again) and came (back) into the city.
ACTS 20:9-10 KJVer    There sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, having fallen into a deep sleep.  As Paul was long preaching, he sank down with sleep, fell down from the 3rd loft, and was taken up dead.  Paul went down, fell on him, and embraced him.  Paul said, "Trouble not yourselves, for his life is in him." 
ACTS 20:12 KJVer    They brought the young man (back) alive and were greatly comforted.  

1st CORINTHIANS 15:20 KJVer    Christ has risen from the dead and has become the first fruit (example/hope/template/model) of those who sleep (in death). 
1st CORINTHIANS 15:22 KJVer  In Adam all die (physically).  In Christ shall all be made alive (spiritually).
1st CORINTHIANS 15:26 KJVer The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

1st THESSALONIANS 4:16-17 KJVer    The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout (with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God).  The dead in Christ shall rise (up) first.  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up  together with those in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air.  So shall  we ever be with the Lord. Comfort one another with these words.

REVELATION 20:4 KJVer    I  saw the souls (spirits/lives) of those who were beheaded for their witness of Jesus and for the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast. They did not have the image or the mark of the beast on their foreheads or hands.  They lived and reigned with Christ 1,000 years.

                                                                         LAMENESS

ACTS 3:2-8 KJVer    A certain man, LAME from his mother's womb, was carried (whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful) to ask alms of them that entered into the temple, who seeing Peer and John about to go into the temple asked an alms (gift/money).  Peter (who was) with John fastening his eyes on him said, "Look at us.  He gave heed to them, expecting to receive something from them.  Peter said, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have I give to you.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk."  He took him by the right hand and lifted him up.  Immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.  He lept up, stood, walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, leaping and praising God.

                                                                           LEPROSY

MATTHEW 8:2 or MARK 1:41 or LUKE 5:12  A man full of LEPROSY, seeing JESUS, fell on his face, and sought HIM, saying, "LORD, if YOU will, YOU can make me clean.  HE put forth HIS hand and touched him, saying, "I will.  Be clean."  Immediately the leprosy departed from him.

                                                                          MUTENESS

MATTHEW 9:32-33  They brought to HIM a DUMB man possessed with a devil.  When the devil was cast out, the DUMB man SPOKE.  The multitudes marveled, saying, "It was never so seen in Israel."
MATTHEW 12:22  Then was brought to HIM one possessed with a devil, blind and DUMB.  HE healed him, so much that the blind and DUMB man both SPOKE and saw.

MARK 7:37 TPNT  "He even makes the deaf to hear and the mutes to speak."
MARK 9:17-29 TPNT    17"Teacher, I brought my son to You because he has a mute spirit.  18Whenever it would seize him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and is stiff.  I asked Your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able."  19Answering them He said, "O unbelieving generation, until when will I be with you?  How long am I to endure you?  Bring him to Me."  20They brought him to Him.  When it saw Him, the spirit immediately convulsed him.  Then he fell on the ground  as was rolling, foaming at the mouth.  21He asked his father, "How long a time has it been like this with him?"  He said, "From childhood.  22It also frequently threw him into a fire and into water, so that it could kill him.  If you are able, You must now help us, if You have pity on us."  23Jesus said to him, "If you would be able to believe, all things are possible to the one who believes."   24Immediately crying out, the father of the child was saying, "I believe.  You must continually help my unbelief."  25When Jesus saw that the crowd was running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit by saying to it, "Mute and deaf spirit, I command you; you must come out from him at once and never again can you enter into him."  26It left after it cried out and the boy had many convulsions.  He became as dead, so that many of those said that he died.  27Jesus, when He took hold of his hand, raised him; he got up.  28When He entered the house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why were we not able to cast it out?"  29He said to them, "This kind is in no way able to come out except in prayer (and fasting)."

MULTIPLICATION

2nd Kings 4:42-44 Messianic TLB  42One day a man from Baal-shalishah brought Elisha a sack of fresh corn and 20 individual loaves of barley bread made from the 1st grain of his harvest.  Elisha told Gehazi to use it to feed the young prophets. "What?" Gehazi exclaimed.  "Feed 100 men with only this?"  But Elisha said, "Go ahead, for the Lord says there will  be plenty for all, and some will even be let over!"  44And sure enough, there was, just as the Lord had said!

WONDERS in the earth

GENESIS Mosses crossed the Red Sea on dry land.
JOSHUA 3:13 Alexander Harlavy     13It shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that came down from above; and they shall stand as one heap.  14It came to pass, when the people removed from their tents to pass over the Jordan and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people; 15And as they that bore the ark were come unto the Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bore the ark were dipped in the brim of the water (for the Jordan overfloweth all its banks all the time of harvest) 16that the waters which came down from above, stood and rose up as one heap very far...and the people passed over right against Jericho.  17The priests that bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over the Jordan.

DANIEL 10:12-14 KJVer    He said to me, "Fear not, Daniel, for from the 1st day that you did set your heart to understand and chasten yourself before your God, your words (prayers) were heard, and I am come for your words (prayers).  The (evil/enemy) prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me 21 days, but lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.  I remained there with the kings of Persia.  Now I am come to make you understand."

MATTHEW 17:20-21 KJV    I (Jesus) say to you, "If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, 'Remove here to yonder place'; and it shall remove.  Nothing shall be impossible to you.  However this kind does not go out, except by prayer and FASTING."

MARK 11:24 TLB    Listen to me.  You can pray for anything.  If you believe, you have it.  It's yours.

LUKE 2:37    This woman was a widow of about 84 years who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
LUKE 4:2 KJV    Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being 40 days tempted of the devil.  In those days He did eat nothing.  When they were ended, He afterward hungered.

ACTS 10:30-31 KJV    Cornelius said, "4 days ago I was fasting until this hour.  At the 9th hour I prayed in my house.  Behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer is heard.  Your alms are remembered in the sight of God.'" 

JAMES 1:6-7 NIV    When he asks, he must believe and not doubt.  He who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord.

They share a WONDERFUL miracle of a child, a twin, being rescued from the womb of a dead woman as she was being buried.  This orphan child nursed off the animals' milk (goats and camels) to stay alive.  God appeared to Richard, at about age 6, and revealed Jesus to him.  Now, Richard, an African youth, like so many wounded/broken children, has become a vehicle of God's healing other children, when he prays for them.  Rather than exclusively using priests and adults, God more and more is raising up children to be His arms and legs and heart and power.

Commentary

Henry Wright, author of A More Excellent Way   www.pleasantvalleychurch.org  seems to distinguish between disease and defects, such as accidents, birth defects, and handicaps.  He encourages miracles for defects, but prefers slow healing for disease, especially incurable disease.  Why?  He contends that most disease is the result of curses from our sin or the sin of our ancestors.  One needs to recognize, repent, resist, rebuke and refuse any negative emotion, habit or sin that is causing the disease to keep it from returning.  If an instantaneous miracle were to cure a sin based disease, then the disease might return at a later date and we would not know how to reject it.  Thus a remission could occur for a time and then a disease, such as cancer, might return and harm or kill us.  Wright's conclusion:  Education + slow healing = permanent healing.  Wright offers clinics throughout the USA.

REMEMBER. Nothing can happen until the groom shows up for the wedding.  We are the bride.  Jesus is the groom.  No miracles will occur without Him.  He is the DOer.  He is the groom.  He is our covering.  He is the head of the household.  In His kingdom there is no women's liberation.  He NOT we get ALL the credits/praise/honor/glory.  We get His name, so we walk in His shadow (which heals) and His covering/fame/reputation, which works, both for us and for the help of others.
