Nightmares may be the subconscious mind working overtime during one's sleep trying to fix problems.
Nightmares may be the emotional turmoil continuing on in the subconscious mind during sleep.
Nightmares may be demonic interference, especially at night when our defenses are down.
Nightmares may be demons masquerading as humans who rape us when we are asleep/defenseless.

Nightmares may be another human spirit harassing our human spirit, especially at night when we are asleep, according to Watchman Nee and Dr. Rebecca Brown Yoder.
If you are having nightmares, keep a journal.
If you are a parent of a child having nightmares, be sure to interview (without being critical) your child and monitor/record his dreams.  Teach your child how to resist/refuse the nightmare.  Stand in the gap in prayer for your child.

RESIST the NIGHTMARE

Speak to it.  Say,
No.  In the name of Jesus, no.
Go.  In the name of Jesus, go.
Go   fear.
Go   torment.
Go   terror.
Come, Lord Jesus.
Come, Holy Spirit.
Come, Father God.
Come, angels of God to defend me.
I cover myself with the blanket of the blood of Jesus.
I am safe.
Thank you Lord.

Fighting our/my/your demons can be a figure of speech, for we all struggle with temptations, the flesh, disease, and aging.  Addictions are particularly bothersome.  Addictions to bad habits, food, chocolate, coffee, medications, illegal drugs, alcohol, porn (soft or hard), sex, etc is a battle/war.  In our mind and in our body there is a constant preoccupation and struggle to not do/think something.  To humans, these demons are real, whether in our mind or in our body.  To make matters worse, these demons can be evil spirits.  If and when they are, we need to call on Jesus Christ to send His warrior angles to come down and assist us.  Satan wants us to fight in our own strength.  God smiles when we quit and ask Him for help.  Jacob wrestled with an angel of the Lord an entire night, but would not let His holy angel go until God blessed him.  Many of us struggle, especially at night when our defenses are down due to medication and sleep.  The enemy has the upper hand terrorizing us at night when we are in bed asleep.  Therefore, read aloud the 91st Psalm before you go to sleep.  If you awaken, yell aloud, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.  Those words will terrorize your enemy.  The tide will change and you will begin to win your war.

If evil spirits are tormenting a person, the initial  reaction may be negative, as demons do not want to be disturbed; they want the upper hand.  We can tell any evil to be quiet, not to speak, to shut up, in the name of Jesus.  Jesus did that Himself, on numerous occasions.

Resist nightmares and bad dreams/thoughts by speaking.  One can speak to the enemy or to God.  One can speak in his/her mind or preferably out LOUD.  The point is, when one is speaking he is taking his attention away from listening.  It is like trying to jump and scratch your head at the same time; it is hard to do 2 things at the same time.  It is hard to listen to a nightmare and sing to God.  So when nightmares come to bother you, retaliate by praying out loud.  Preferably out loud, whisper, hum, sing or praise.  Better still, dance - on you way to the bathroom and back!  Laugh, even at yourself.

Thompson, Robb D http://www.winninginlife.org  recovered from mental illness.  One of the things he did was to mentally grab each tormenting thought and take it to the cross.  Then he commanded it to repeat to Jesus' cross, what it had told him.  Each thought fled when he did this.  It always worked for him, even if he had to repeat it from time to time.

Old Testament

Genesis 32:24-30 NIV    24Jacob was left alone, and a man (holy angel/God/Jesus/Messiah) wrestled with him till daybreak.  25When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.  26Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak."  But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."  27The man asked him, "What is your name?"  "Jacob," he answered.  28Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."  29Jacob said, "Please tell me your name."  But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?"  Then he blessed him there.  30So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God fact to face, and yet my life was spared."

1st Samuel 16:12-16 KJV    The Lord said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he."  Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.  The Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward...But, the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.  Saul's servants said to him, "Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.  Let our lord now command your servants, which are before you, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on a harp. It shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon you, that he shall play (music/hymns) with his hand, and you shall be well."  (Spiritual insight = evil spirit was NOT from God, but allowed by God)
1st Samuel 16:22-23 KJV    Saul sent to Jesse (David's dad), saying, "Let David, I pray you, stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight."  It came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon (tormented) Saul, that David took a harp and played (music/hymns) with his hand.  Saul was refreshed and was well, for the evil spirit had departed from him.  
1st Samuel 18:10 KJV    It came to pass on the next day that the evil (distressing) spirit from (Satan, but allowed by) God came upon Saul; he prophesied in the midst of the house.  (Then) David played (a harp) with his hand, as at other times. (To consider.  God does not remove our/His gifts.  However, there can be false prophecy, for Satan copies God.)

Psalm 23:4 JKVer    Yea, though I walk  through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no        evil, for You are with me.
Psalm 91  I  shall not be afraid for the terror by night...nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness.

Matthew 4:24 NKJV    They brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics;  He healed them.
Matthew 18:21-35 NIV    Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother (relative/close associate) when he sins against me?  Up to 7 times?"  Jesus answered, "I tell you, not 7 times, but 77 times.  The kingdom of heaven (God) is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants (staff).  As he began the settlement, a man who owed him 10,000 talents was brought to him.  Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he, his wife, his children, and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.  The servant fell on his knees before him.  'Be patient with me,' he begged 'and I will pay back everything.'  The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.  But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a 100 denarii.  He grabbed him and began to choke him.  'Pay back what you owe me!',  he demanded.  His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me and I will pay you back.'  He refused.  Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.  When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, went, and told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in.  'You wicked servant,' he said.  'I cancelled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.  Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?'  In anger his master turned him over to the to the jailers to be tortured (tormented), until he should pay back all he owed.  This is how My heavenly Father (God) will treat each of you unless your forgive your brother from your heart." (Otherwise the evil spirits of anger/hatred/resentment/self-pity/bitterness will be allowed to torment you and terrify you with nightmares/phobias/fears/anxiety. = Spiritual Insight)

Hebrews 4:12 NIV    The word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.  It penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.  It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

2nd Corinthians 12:3-4 KJV    I (Paul) knew a man in Christ about 14 years ago (Whether in the body, I cannot tell, or whether out of the body, I cannot tell; God knows.) who was caught up the the 3rd heaven.  He was caught up into paradise.

Revelation 1:9-10 NIV    I, John (your brother and companion in the suffering, kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus) was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.  On the Lord's Day I was in the (Holy) Spirit.
Revelation 4:1 NIV    After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven.  The voice I heard 1st heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this."  At once I was in the (Holy) Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with Someone sitting on it.
Revelation 16:13-14 KJVer    I saw 3 unclean (evil/demonic) spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. They are the spirits of devils, working miracles.

At School     "Some psychologists consider dreams to be doorways into the unconscious mind.  Considering the vulnerability of children, dreams, bad dreams, and nightmares can be the manifestations of the presence of demons or indications that they are attempting to gain entry...Cast it out by its characteristics.  'You, spirit that manifests as an abominable snowman figure, come out of him in Jesus' name.'"  It is also feasible, in some typical situations, to pray for "deliverance right over the phone."
Gate of Abuse   Intentional or unintentional abuse may trigger nightmares in the victim.  "I  was very sorry to have scared him and did ask him to forgive me at that time...The thing began to surface, and we realized that fear had taken hold of him and was manifesting through his nightmares...A tormenting fear that had entered him, and was manifesting at least 10 years later.  We cast it out, and there has been no recurrence."
Deliverance for Teens - Sample Prayers   Having read up on deliverance, prepared a list of problem areas, determined before God that he/she wants to be free, forgiven ALL who have hurt him/her, confessed any known sins, and broken all  ties with both sins and Satan, the born-again spirit-filled teen can pray (command):
"In the name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over the spirit(s) tormenting me.  I bind you, you spirit of _________ ,
(you spirit of ____________ , you spirit of ____________ , etc., naming any negative emotion such as fear, anger, torment) and I command (each of ) you (named spirits) to leave me right now (and never to return) in Jesus' name."

Chapter 8 A Tangible Terror 
Jesus allowed Mary to observe demons of fear reach out to woo, claw, bite and scream at victims, plus to observe a demon of claustrophobia not allowing one to breath freely, causing the individual to always feel cool, to hear lonely, mournful sounds humming in the subconscious, to fill one with darkness, to haunt the mind with fearful shapes. 
"The Bible points out that when a demon overtakes a person, the individual won't get any better unless the demon is cast out."  A terrorist needs to be bound and cast out, in the name of Jesus. 
"'Demons cannot get into your spirit if you are a child of Mine," Jesus told me.  'Your spirit is the real you.  That is the place where I dwell within you.  As long as I dwell there, a demon cannot cohabit with Me.'"
Chapter 12 The Final War in the Cosmos  "Jesus will not live in the same heart with a demon.  When the Lord comes in, the devils have to flee!"  (Oppression is harassment from the outside.  Cover yourself, your bed and your room with the blood of  Jesus!  Sing and praise.  Read the Bible out loud.  Demons will flee.  Never rely on your feelings.  Only rely on God and His Word.  One's FIRST thoughts/ideas/impressions are often from God.  Follow up thoughts are often from the enemy who argues with God.)
Chapter 9 A Strategy for Destruction "God told me to...tell you that interceding pray is the key to unlocking the blessings of heaven."
"The demon knocked a picture of Jesus off the wall...Then the demon turned the bedside radio back on...The demon...fear filled the room like a thick fog.  The air was heavy, almost too thick to breath or to move through....
As he called out to God, the radio switched off by itself.  The air immediately went  back to normal."

Testimonies of the Power of the Blood section Kept by the Blood, When Satan Oppresses  shares the story of Pastor Roy Tucker.  During the night angry demons decided to immobilize/paralyze his body and levitate it to the ceiling.  The only recourse/resistance he had was to THINK, "In the name of Jesus and in the power of the blood of the Lamb, I resist the devil and all his evil spirits."  Each repetition brought both physical and spiritual relief until regained more and more  control of his body, vision, and voice.  Then he could whisper, "Jesus!" and eventually yell it.  It worked.  He was free.

Bell shares that children stopped having nightmares, after dolls and stuffed animals were removed from their bedrooms.  Another man during sleep was nightly attacked by demons coming through his bedroom ceiling and entering his chest.  Come to find out, his Buddhist wife in Korea was praying for him in the US at the time this occurred.  After Bell burned her spiritual books, the wife accepted Jesus as her savior and his night terrors stopped.

The enemy/Satan assault us the easiest when we are asleep, off guard duty, when our conscious mind is not filtering out danger/evil.  Thus we can ask God to send His Holy Spirit and His holy angels to protect/keep watch over us while we are sleeping.  He will gladly, if we only ask.

In chapter 25 Adventures in God  Lake shares testimonies of healing and translation.  One such story is of a member of the Apostolic Tabernacle, Johannesburg, South Africa who asked the congregation to pray for his/her insane cousin in a Whales asylum.  During prayer Lake's spirit was transported to the asylum; he laid hands on the head of the woman, commanded in the Name of Jesus Christ Son of God that the demon possessing her be cast out, and commanded in the Name of Jesus Christ Son of God that she be healed by God's power.  3 weeks later a letter arrived stating that at that after 7 years in the asylum she had miraculously become well.

(Consider the elderly in nursing homes who have what the medical community calls 'sundowning' (psychiatric symptoms after sunset). Typically this is just another demonic manifestation, where the enemy has the upper hand when all mental and physical defenses are down and ignorance abounds.)

Chapter 3 - Turning Around and Turning Back -
"I repented of my sins and gave my life to Christ that day....I said, 'What do you want me to do, Lord?' 
'Just start praising Me,' was His answer...I walked through the house praising and thanking the Lord. 
No evil spirits could torment me...My dreams changed and I slept well at night for the first time since I was 5 years old."
Chapter 4 A Trip to Hell - "The cherub replied, 'I was sent from the throne of God to protect you....Yes, you were in hell.'  Naming one of the demonic spirits I had seen in hell, the cherub explained to me, 'This spirit goes throughout hell supervising the torment of people.  He is coming to take you back to hell.  But do not fear.  I am here to protect you.'"
Chapter 6 Death and Rebellion - "As I lay in my bed, I...saw the big face spirit, the same one that had tormented me as a child.  This evil spirit was laughing at me....I said, 'Get out of here, in the name of Jesus.'" 
"The (evil) spirit replied, 'You can't make me leave...You have no power over me because you are in rebellion.'" 
"Then I heard (another) voice say... 'You are stiff-necked, rebellious, and heard-hearted...Repent...Finish the work God told you to do.'"

Chapter 9 Who's Watching the Children - "In the occult world, the nighttime hours are called bewitching hours, and that is when evil spirits come into the house to torment children.  Before they go to bed, fill their minds with things of God and pray with them"...
"I heard something tapping on the side of my bed...I turned on the light and didn't see anything.  Then the Holy Spirit said to me, 'It's the toys in the box.'  I threw those toys away immediately and the tapping stopped.  Evil spirits attach themselves to these kinds of demonic toys."
"When I was young, I was watching television late one night and saw a demonic spirit jump out of the television and jump back in"...
Chapter 10 There's Something in My Room -
"Demonic spirits even have a favorite classroom,...right there in you child's room, especially at night...
Nightmares (can) become more common this time of year (Halloween)...Children (can) start experiencing nightmares between ages 3 and 5... Nightmares can be demonic attacks caused by allowing these evil spirits access to your home (via occultic TV/radio/music/toys/etc)...
Demonic spirits will not leave until a believer in Christ (who is NOT actively walking in unconfessed sin) takes authority over them in the name of Jesus and commands them to leave." 
"If the waster spirit is NOT dealt with, it will eventually move from night torments to house haunting...
If not dealt with the child will (often) grow up to become a fearful and paranoid adult who might suffer from panic attacks...
Another spirit that children deal with is the big face spirit, which has a very large face and no visible body.  It often attacks children who have a call and an anointing of God upon their lives, so the child will not fulfill his destiny in Christ.  Pay attention to children who have strong disciplinary problems.  This spirit will teach children how to gain power...It will give the child step-by-step instructions on how to destroy people."
"The 3rd spirit that children deal with at night is the pillardoc spirit...I even watched this spirit split itself into several different spirits, each of which will attack other family members."
"The big face spirit will have them involved in gangs, alcohol, and drugs.  The pillardoc spirit will promise the child fame, power, or whatever it thinks the child might want.  If your child obeys these spirits, they will own your child...Those who are being tormented at night are primarily dealing with these 3 spirits...Even black spots and hoops that appear in the room and on the ceiling at night are an indication that the waster sprit is in the room."
A parent is responsible for his child's spiritual welfare.  He/she can declare, "I might not see you (evil spirit/spirits), but my child says you are here, so I know you are here.  I know who you are and I know why you're here.  The blood of Jesus defeated you and every evil spirit at the cross.  I am  going to anoint my child with oil and pray. I am covering my child, this room, and our home with the protection of the blood of Jesus.  You cannot torment my child any longer.  I command you, in the name of Jesus, to leave this place and never return."  (Be sure to lead your child to a saving relationship with Jesus and baptism in the Holy Spirit.  Teach him/her how to resist/evict the enemy by  their quoting Psalm 91, saying the name of Jesus, applying the blood of Jesus, anointing their doors and windows with consecrated oil, not watching adult movies/TV, not listening to adult music such as rock, not watching non-Christian cartoons, not reading stories about fairies/witches/wizards, not being involved in ANY activity which makes them uncomfortable, not playing fantasy games, and not possessing/playing with ugly/demonic looking toys.   The same principles apply to adults who can do self-deliverance.)
Chapter 14 Questions and Answers     In any new residence/hotel/bedroom "immediately take authority over any spirits that might have taken up residence.  Speak blessings and the blood of Jesus over the home, your possessions, and your family.  Even in a newly built home...never allow demonic spirits to stay in your home and torment you...
After my friend moved into the (newly purchased) house, his children were tormented every night...As soon as I  walked in the house...the waster spirit even started to materialize...We took anointing oil, prayed the Word of God over the house, and commanded the evil spirits to leave, in the name of Jesus.  We prayed in our prayer language of the Holy Spirit as we walked throughout the house...The children never had another problem with tormenting spirits... When the self engages the monster, all kinds of ill effects ensue, including, in ancestral cultures, demonic or spirit possession (or evil spirit oppression). 
There is a danger involved in the encounter with spirit beings; you may not psychically survive the encounter. Instead, the malevolent spirit will take up residence in your consciousness and (attempt to) control your actions. You become possessed. Nightmare frequency is high in childhood and in adolescence and young adulthood. Young girls tend to experience nightmares more frequently than boys.
In adults, recurrent nightmares occur in people with so-called thin boundaries. These are people who are especially sensitive to sensory impressions. Creative people, like artists, writers, musicians, and so forth, also report more nightmares than others. A different form of nightmare, heavily influenced by memory, occurs frequently in people who have experienced trauma of one kind or another.
In about 2 percent of the adult population, nightmares occur frequently. They do not recur in the sense that the same scene is replayed night after night, but they do recur insofar as the individual experiences frequent nightmares. Post-traumatic nightmares, on the other hand, do recur with the same scene, with minor variations, being replayed over and over again...
Various forms of cognitive restructuring of the imagery associated with a nightmare can reduce the distress associated with nightmares. In cognitive restructuring, you take a central image from the nightmare and literally redraw it, on paper or in imagination, so that it is less threatening or frightening. You can also do this with the use of stories. Take the nightmare story and retell it, with less frightening themes and a less frightening outcome.
The traditional" explanation says that "our dreams and nightmares reflect unconscious conflicts and fears. So, examining images and themes of dreams and nightmares can tell us something important about our unconscious fears and conflicts. I doubt that this is true.
Instead, nightmares appear to be about the strength of the ego, or the “I,” the self. It is always the self that is under attack in a nightmare. On the surface it appears that people who suffer frequent nightmares have more fragile egos than the rest of us, but when you look deeper, these people very likely have the strongest egos, or sense of self, on the planet. They handle the frightening images on a daily basis. They are very strong individuals."
[REMEMBER, some bad dreams are informative and/or warnings.  Most bad dreams have NO spiritual relevance. God's Holy Spirit is always the strongest spirit and will immediately come and defend us when we call on Him.  Likewise we can in the name of Jesus enlist the help of our guardian angel and warrior angels to do warfare on our behalf.  We can anoint our loved ones with the anointing oil.  We can anoint their beds, windows, and doors.  We can defend ourselves, too, by commanding evil to depart, in the name of Jesus.  We can cover ourselves spiritually with the blood of Christ, when we go to bed.  We can play holy music throughout the night, to create a holy atmosphere which alienates evil.]

Chapter 4 Recognize and learn from Visions  "The ordinary way - the everyday, the most common way - to receive a vision from God is in the nighttime while you're asleep.  If you don't know the importance of night visions...you'll run the risk of missing something important from the Lord.  Don't miss God.  Be open to receive visions (dreams) from Him...You and I call these dreams, but the Lord calls them visions in the night...
See Acts 16:9, Acts 18:9...(Even) if you see something terrible...be open to this being God's way of warning you of what Satan is up to. 
You can discern whether visions are from  God or the devil...Realize the Lord may be exposing Satan's works to you, SO that you can DO something about them."
Introduction "Unless you respond to something (that alarm bell) in your spirit, the Holy Ghost cannot help you in that particular area."
Chapter 5 Visions Can Impart Knowledge  "If you receive a vision with a destructive type of scene, ASK the Lord to show you what to DO to stop that (ominous) vision from becoming reality...He (God) wants the believer to pray about what He shows him, and break the power of the devil...
The devil won't let you know in advance what (evil) he's going to do...He's (the devil is) always trying to sneak up on your blind side."
See Matthew 18:18 "If we're NOT going to BIND up anything on earth, God will have to sit there from the beginning of our life until the end of it and NOT be able to do anything about what happens to us.  God does what we do."
(If demons are haunting/terrorizing you in nightmares, command them to go, in the name of Jesus.  If Jesus is showing you evil which Satan is planning, then you can DO something to prevent/avert that evil, in the name of Jesus.  In the name of Jesus, for beginners, you can refuse, reject, cancel/bind it.  You can cover the person or situation with the blood of Jesus.  You can enlist holy angels, in the name of Jesus. Jesus works best, and Satan the least/worst, in an ATMOSPHERE of praise and thanksgiving, so immediately begin to worship, regardless of how you feel/think.)
